This 52-year-old farmer converted his six-acre agricultural plot into a coffee plantation in 2006 to establish a stable source of income. Over the next 12 years, he and his wife followed bare minimum coffee management practices, undertook all the post-harvest practices – drying, pulping, and selling in the market. While growing coffee improved their income slightly, it was an unsustainable, non-conducive work environment in the long run, with low-quality yield, low returns, unstable market prices, and poor accessibility.
In 2018, with the presence of Naandi Foundation growing in their village, the farmer joined its farmer co-operative, primarily with the aim of reducing the drudgery. Naandi’s holistic approach to coffee production – from critical inputs and knowledge/skills transfer that improved the ecology of the coffee plot, leading to better yield and quality of the coffee cherries, to doorstep procurement – lifted a huge burden from their shoulders. It guaranteed them fair returns, timely payments, and worldwide market accessibility.
Today, nine years on, the couple is finally experiencing the future they dreamed of with consistently improving yield and better income!
