In the making of Araku coffee, the family and the farm are interlinked as the entire family comes together for farm maintenance. Right from preparation of the soil, planting, bush maintenance and finally cherry picking – women, too, play a critical role in agricultural activities.
Tamarla and Lakshmi Gundanna is one such family unit. The couple are a family of 5, with three daughters. A consistent high performer, the Gundanna family has been in the top 25 high performing farmers in 2019 and 2020, winning the title of the ‘Best Farmer Family’ in Gems of Araku 2020. With a remarkably high score of 99.2 in the 2020 farmer assessment for Gems of Araku 2020, the family’s farm has remained exemplary in all regards. The coffee taste is reflected in the impeccable care and pride the family takes for the outstanding coffee they produce.
Thousands of families in Araku like the Gundanna’s are now bridging the gender gap and achieving this important Sustainable Development Goal, one step at a time.
