Lot 34: Farm, Farmer & Soil Resilience
In October 2014, when the Hudhud cyclone hit parts of India, leaving behind a trail of destruction, Araku felt it too. The torrential rains and gale-force winds brought widespread destruction to coffee plots, especially to the shade trees. In village Liviti, for instance, 44 out of 73 coffee farms were damaged. It was then, that the community came together to rebuild their lost farms.
Over the last few years, farmers have meticulously worked on their coffee farms to regain their livelihoods. In addition to coffee, the team at Naandi provided diverse saplings for shade including fruit trees and pepper for a diversified income. Liviti, thus, tells a story of triumph over adversity and the coffee produced has turned out to be a winner in yield and taste!
