GEMS19038: Canopy to Connoiseur

GEMS19038

"This farmer laid the foundation for his coffee under a canopy of silver oak long before recognition reached these hills. Planting shade trees on a 1.5-acre plot was a conscientious effort by this farmer's father, but it has since evolved into a thriving coffee ecosystem under a diversified shade, shaped by ongoing learning.
Coffee took root here with purpose, but its true transformation began in 2016, when he joined Naandi. The soil began to transform from red and hard to black, porous, humus-rich, and soft to the touch. Birds returned to his coffee plot, soaring through the canopy of the shade trees, acting as the plot's main protectors by feeding on harmful insects.

Above ground, the change is equally visible. With discipline and precision, only the ripe, full-bodied, and deep red cherries are carefully picked and graded at the plot and at home to meet Grade-1 quality standards. This has led him to contribute to ARAKU coffee – now well known worldwide. His journey, like that of other top Gems farmers, is defined by excellence and nourished by nature, from a shaded hillside to international cups.
