GEMS19040: Building Legacy

GEMS19040

"Hope did not arrive; it grew with the seeds nurtured with patience, learning, and determination. In 2014, inspired by other coffee farmers, this 43-year-old farmer began his 2.5-acre coffee plot, making a courageous pivot towards a new livelihood away from agricultural crops.

However, it was not without its challenges. Limited knowledge of coffee growing meant a poor understanding of harvesting techniques, which harmed their bushes and further reduced their chances of future yield.

Everything changed when they embarked upon Naandi’s regenerative agriculture journey, two years ago. They embraced the regenerative agriculture and good coffee management practices — keeping the ideal bush height of four feet, replacing stripping with selective picking, harvesting only crimson cherries. While the couple is yet to incorporate the full gamut of Naandi’s practices, such as bioinputs and compost application, their plot has already made a remarkable transformation solely based on improved coffee management practices, which contributed to consistent growth in their yield — fostering a deeper understanding of what makes the coffee bush tick.
