GEMS19012: Black Gold

GEMS19012

"This 50-year-old farmer, before starting his own coffee plot, used to work as a laborer on other farms during the harvest season. Seeing the income earned by those farmers from coffee, he began his own 2.5-acre coffee plot.

However, he grew coffee without the right support in knowledge and skills. His coffee bushes grew ten feet tall, dense and weak. Rain would wash away the fertile top layer. With Naandi’s guidance, his coffee plot began to transform. Trenches created in his coffee plot slowed down the rainwater flow and reduced top-soil erosion. With diligent practices like compost application and pruning of coffee bushes, and diverse shade, his coffee plot underwent a makeover and biodiversity re-emerged. Today, peacocks are not just visitors on his farm but part of his farming life. They naturally loosen the soil, much like gentle tilling. He cultivates a future in which the land flourishes alongside his aspirations, not just coffee.
