Lot GEMS 18021: Shades of Canopy
This coffee farmer inherited a nine-year old family coffee farm from his father. A family with very humble beginnings made coffee their source of livelihood. However, inadequate shade management meant low yields and smaller returns.
As a result of Naandi's intervention, he adopted corrective shade management practices and witnessed a true transformation of his coffee plot. Now, his coffee plot is a lush, layered biodiverse ecosystem sheltered by towering silver oaks, mango, jackfruit, custard apple, and other forest trees. Beneath them, coffee bushes flourish in sunlight, their leaves deep green and shiny. The soil - once coarse and dry, is now full of life, soft, moist, and rich with fallen leaves that nourish the earth.
Optimizing shade did not just revive his coffee plot; it brought abundance. Fruit trees yield extra income, while timber promises future security. The uncertainty of income and the pressure of low yields no longer concern him.
